Friday morning at Robie Park

By Donna O'Gara

We left Auburn about 9AM, Arrived at Robie well before 11. Whatever could go wrong so far has gone wrong. So far, though, we're handling it.

Becky's pickup is making several new noises. We voted on it and decided that we preferred it to be the muffler, but I'm afraid reality will have the final vote. Just so it makes it through the weekend and gets us home again we'll be happy. We can't decide if it's grade 1 or 2.

Lynne and I were up till midnight trying to figure out how to get our computers to work through the motel phone system and connect to the internet. I understand she never gives up. Good thing, as I was just about ready to cry and see if that helped. Probably wouldn't have. She finally managed to get it figured out.

I got new batteries for my tape recorder before I left, and I tried it out to be sure that it ran. I played a tape. Unfortunately I didn't think to see if it could record. Oh well, I guess I'll have to learn to read my own handwriting.

I'm in Becky's camper, parked in the vendor area. I talked to a group from Solvang a few minutes ago: Sylvia Beverly, who's starting her 4th Tevis, planning on her 3rd finish. She's with Helen Logan, who is hoping for her 13th finish out of 14 tries. They are with John Parke who brought his Icelandic "Remington", and says if they finish Remington will have 2,000 miles. He was the first Icelandic to do 1,000, and plans to be the first to finish Tevis. He say he'll let me ride him later. I've wanted to ride an Icelandic for years.

11:30 AM - 48 in the vet check line, about 30 saddles on the big tarp beside the line, and 3 wheelbarrows with a few more. Quiet conversations all around, laughter, clanging of the shoer in the background. Just like any other ridecamp, only more so. Old friends meeting after many months.

Ann Krotochvill is here. I haven't seen her in a couple of years. We rode together at her first distance ride about 10 years ago. She's riding Rooney again. I crewed for Ann and Rooney on their first ride a few years ago.

There are 15 or 20 vendors here. Whatever you need, they have it.
